Jacklyn Monk is executive editor of Essence and InStyle magazines. She sets and enforces deadlines, oversees the research, copy, production, and special projects departments, and managers the Essence print and digital budgets. Ms. Monk was deputy managing editor of Real Simple for 15 years and has held senior positions at Vibe and Bridal Guide. A media executive with extensive leadership, management, strategic, and operations experience, Ms. Monk has a proven track record for quickly synthesizing information, implementing effective systems, and efficiently executing projects. At the age of 25, she became the first African American beauty editor at a general audience women’s magazine, New Woman. In addition to being a member of the Aging in New York Fund board, Ms. Monk is on the Amistad Research Center Board of Directors. In April 2017, Folio named Ms. Monk one of the Top Women in Media.
Ms. Monk is a graduate of the City University of New York at York College and the Université de Paris: Sorbonne Nouvelle and Vincennes-Saint Denis. She received a Mastering Management certificate from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth in 2011 and a Product Management certificate from General Assembly in 2017. In her spare time, Ms. Monk enjoys collects photography and loves attending music festivals. She was born and raised in the Greenpoint-Williamsburg section of Brooklyn and lives in Jackson Heights with her husband.
